How do I find a specific flight?

This webpage uses JQuery Data Tables to display the flight data.  This gives you several ways to sort and filter the data.  Since this is done on your local machine it works very quickly.

You can change the number of records by selected a value in the Display records list box.  Clicking on a header will sort the table on that column.  Clicking the same column header will reverse the sort order.  The entry labeled Search is actually a filter box.  It will display all records that contain all of the words in any column.  As an example, entering "WB8ELK" will show all of Bill Brown's flights.  Entering "WB8ELK PELL" will only show Bill's flights at Pell City High School.

How do I get email about new flights?

This website sends an email to the yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ARHABLaunchNotifier when it detects a Likely flight.  Subscribe to this yahoo group to get email notifications of new flights.  Note: This detection isn't perfect.  You will get a few flights that turn out not to be high altitude balloons.  These tend to be hot air balloons or erroneous transmission by trackers.

What about twitter?

This website now sends a tweet when a flight is detected and when a burst is detected. The twitter name used is flightdata99. The hashtag #ARHAB is also on every tweet. Note: This detection isn't perfect.  You will get a few flights that turn out not to be high altitude balloons.  These tend to be hot air balloons or erroneous transmission by trackers.

Why is my flight not showing up?

The data used comes from APRS-IS (Automatic Packet Reporting System-Internet Service).  Your data must be forwarded to this system.  In most places if you are using the standard APRS frequency this will happen.  In order to limit the amount of data processed, this stream is filtered at the server to only send the Balloon and Rocket Symbols.  These are the letter O in the symbol table and alternate symbol table.  Finally, you must be sending a Position (any format) or Mic-E packet that contains the altitude.

What does "Likely" and "Active" mean?

Detecting a launch is more of an art than a science.  The first phase detected is an altitude increase of 4,000 feet.  These are labeled as "Likely" flights.  The next step is when the balloon goes above 30,000 feet.  At this point most non-balloon trackers are eliminated and the flight is labeled "Active".  If a "Likely" flight does not reach 30,000 feet within 2 hours it is not considered a balloon and dropped from the table.  A flight will remain active until it has not been heard from for an hour.

What are Sonde Flights?

At various times a group in Europe appears to relay regular weather radiosonde flights to APRS-IS.  While interesting they are not really amateur flights.  For that reason these are put in another table.
